Perun, the Slavic god of lightning, the sky and the living world, was said to take the form of an eagle and sit atop a sacred tree, from which he kept watch over the whole world.
Here he has descended to the dark roots of the tree, to capture and defeat his slithery opponent Veles, serpentine god of the underworld.
